You rode into my life, a knight in shining armor; pulling me out of my own miry pit.

A hero in my eyes, until you sliced me with your sword.

It wasn’t intentional, you’d say.
In fact, how dare I assume it was even about me at all?

This invalidation lodged a dagger in my heart, and I began to bleed.

You were fighting demons hidden from my sight; I got in the way.

Our love became a casualty of the sword aimed at your own self-destruction.

Little did you know, God chose me from the ranks; a warrior’s heart beats within my chest.

Messy, yes; Imperfect, even more so.
But real, true and unyielding in the face of an evil that seeks to devour.

He wanted you to tell me of the demons you faced.

This revelation marred you in my sight as fear clouded my view.

At first, I didn’t see through the fog.

When I got the real enemy in my sights, you already had me in yours.

The same fog that clouded my vision of you, shaped your vision of me.

Lies whispered in your ear, reminding you of my worst.

You were tricked into befriending the demons who demonized me.

Maybe I deserved it?

Maybe if I had done better in the beginning, you wouldn’t have kept betraying me?

Truth reminds me you required a lot of grace yet had very little to give.

God reminds me who I am; my warrior’s heart began to beat again.

I stopped fighting for your love and let you go;
I started resting in His love and standing in the Truth.

I couldn’t set you free from your prison; only Truth can do that.

You chose darkness; pretending it’s light.

I chose Truth; removing myself from your path of destruction.

Your armor no longer shines for me.
It reminds me of the cost of self-protection, where our love lies dead on the floor.

It reflects to me my own image: A daughter of the King.

Not a knight in shining armor, but a messy, imperfect, battle-tested warrior.

A warrior who knows when it’s time to stop fighting, who knows letting go is sometimes the most loving thing you can do…

When a knight has chosen the night.
